Observational Study for Head and Neck or Lung Cancers

This study aims to find new markers in blood and tissue that can help predict how head and neck or lung cancers will behave, especially when tumors have low oxygen levels (tumor hypoxia). Tumor hypoxia can make cancer harder to treat and more likely to spread. Researchers have found some proteins like osteopontin, lysyl oxidase, and macrophage inhibiting factor that might help identify these aggressive tumors. If you have squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck or non-small cell lung cancer, or are a relative of someone with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, you might be able to join. The study involves collecting tumor tissue and blood samples to identify these markers and see how their levels change during treatment. The goal is to better understand and monitor these cancers.

Study design
This is an observational study planning to enroll 200 participants. It is not testing a new treatment but rather observing existing conditions and collecting samples.
What's involved
You would have a tumor biopsy if you are already having one for treatment, and blood draws (about 20 cc) before any cancer therapy. If you are receiving radiation at Stanford, you would also have weekly blood draws.

Histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck sites or non-small cell lung cancer, or relatives of patients with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
Able to sign a Stanford IRB approved consent form
