Observational Study of Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases

This study is looking at people who have been exposed to or infected with certain dangerous agents, like those that could be used in bioterrorism (e.g., anthrax) or emerging infectious diseases (e.g., SARS, MERS, Ebola, or new flu strains). The goal is to better understand how these infections affect people and to find more effective ways to prevent and treat them. You could be eligible if you are between 3 and 99 years old, have a confirmed lab diagnosis of one of these infections, and are stable enough to be transferred to the Clinical Center. The study will track your symptoms and signs for up to one year to see how the illness progresses.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Close contact is defined as having cared for, having lived with, or having direct contact with respiratory secretions and/or body fluids of a patient identified as a suspected case of contagious disease.
Other contact of sufficient proximity and duration to incite reasonable concern that transmission of the causative agent of a contagious disease in the above categories may have occurred. This will be determined on an individual basis by the Principal Investigator (PI) or an Associate Investigator (AI) using best medical judgment.
