Observational Study of Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases of the Nervous System

This is an observational study looking at how infections and inflammation affect the brain and nervous system (Brain Disease). Researchers want to understand the natural course of these conditions and identify what causes them, as well as the underlying immune system and genetic factors. This will help them develop better tests and treatments in the future. You may be able to join if you are at least 2 years old and have a known or suspected infection or inflammation of the nervous system. The study aims to enroll 1000 participants. Success for this study means understanding the natural progression of these diseases, measured 12 months after the last participant joins.

Study design
This is an observational study, meaning no specific interventions are being tested. It is a longitudinal case series, collecting data over time from participants.
What's involved
Some participants will have blood, tissue, and other samples collected by an outside clinician. Other participants will have scheduled visits to the NIH, which may include a comprehensive history, neurological exam, blood collection, neuroimaging (scans of the brain and nervous system), and a lumbar puncture (spinal tap).
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
The natural history of individual cases will be measured at 12 months after the last participant is enrolled.
