Observational Study of Biomarkers in Friedreich's Ataxia

This study is looking to better understand Friedreich's Ataxia (FA) by studying how the heart and muscles perform in people with the condition. Researchers will use special tests like echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds) and MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging) to measure heart function, as well as exercise tests and nerve studies. The goal is to find reliable ways to measure how FA affects the body, which could help in testing new treatments in the future. You may be able to join if you have a genetic diagnosis of FA or are a healthy volunteer, are between 6 and 70 years old, and can do exercise testing. Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Genetic diagnosis of Friedreich's ataxia by DNA sequencing, mutational analysis or protein assay OR be a healthy subject with no evidence of a neuromuscular disorder
Between the ages of 6 and 70 (inclusive)
Are able to tolerate metabolic exercise testing
Are stable on cardiac medication regimen for 3 months prior to screening

Exclusion

Presence of unstable heart disease
Receipt of cardiac transplant
Any concurrent medical condition which, in the opinion of the investigators, would make the subject unsuitable for the study
