Pilot Study of Glutamine Use in Bone Marrow Plasma Cells

This pilot study aims to understand how normal bone marrow plasma cells use glutamine (a type of amino acid). Researchers will give participants an intravenous (IV) infusion of 5-13C-Glutamine and then take a bone marrow aspiration (a procedure to collect a small sample of bone marrow). The main goal is to measure the amount of 13-Carbon molecules in the plasma cells' TCA cycle (a process cells use to create energy) to see how glutamine is being used. This study is looking for 20 healthy volunteers between 18 and 60 years old. You cannot participate if you have kidney or liver disease, are pregnant, use steroids, have anemia, or have a high BMI. The study is currently recruiting participants.

Renal Failure
Pregnancy
Active steroid use
Active liver Disease
Anemia (Hemoglobin \< 12.5 g/dL in men and \< 11.5 g/dL in women)
H/O alcohol use (average \> 2 drinks per day)
BMI \> 30

    The plasma cells obtained from the bone marrow aspiration will be processed to determine the percent of 13-carbon enrichment in the various molecules of the TCA cycle within the plasma cells. The outcomes will be reported as a percentage. E.G. 5% of glutamine is labeled with 13-Carbon; e.g. 4% of glutamate is labeled with 13-carbon etc.
