Understanding Reflux in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)

This study is looking at the role of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), a type of reflux where stomach acid comes up into the throat, in people with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Researchers want to see if a measurement called the Supraglottic Index (SGI) can accurately identify LPR and how severe it is in individuals with IPF. They believe the SGI will better show the link between reflux and IPF severity compared to other reflux tests. You may be able to join if you are 40 to 95 years old, have an IPF diagnosis, and can speak and understand English. If you take reflux medication, it needs to be at a stable dose for at least four weeks. The study aims to enroll 60 participants.

Diagnosis of IPF
Age 40-95
Able to read, speak, and understand English
If subjects are currently taking medication for reflux or GERD, they much be on a stable does for at least 4 weeks prior to consent.
Pregnant females

  • The supraglottic index (SGI) quantifies laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPF) and is associated with severity of pulmonary fibrosis.6 months

    Correlation between the supraglottic index and forced vital capacity. The supraglottic index is an index derived by assigning scores for edema and erythema of five supraglottic structures (epiglottis, false cords, arytenoids, posterior commissure, piriform recess) as viewed through a fiber-optic scope. Scores range from 0-22, with higher scores indicating more severe LPR.
