Assessment of Healing and Function After Bone Sarcoma Reconstruction Surgery

This study is looking at how well bone heals and how much function returns in people who have had reconstructive surgery for bone sarcomas (cancers of the bone), including osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing's sarcoma. Researchers will observe participants who have had reconstruction with bone grafts or artificial devices, or tumor surgery with regenerative osseous (bone) surgery. They will measure your recovery level at 1 year and 3 years after surgery using questionnaires and physical tests like the Timed Get Up and Go Test. This study is for patients of all ages (4 years and older) who have undergone reconstructive surgery for bone tumors at MSK and have a confirmed diagnosis.

Study design
This is an observational study planning to include 300 participants. It will involve assessments over a 3-year period after surgery.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

All patients undergoing reconstructive surgery for neoplasms involving bone on the orthopaedic surgery service at MSK
Current or prior history of primary neoplasms involving osseous structures, including all subtypes
Confirmation of diagnosis that has been performed by the MSK's Department of Pathology via direct review of tissue/slides
Patients must read and understand English
Age \>/=4
Patients must read and understand English

Exclusion

Patients that weight \<17 kilograms

    The primary objective is to assess early recovery level of function of all participants undergoing reconstructive surgery after resection of osseous neoplasms. The early time frame is considered at one year from the neoplasm resection surgery.
