Tamsulosin for Preventing Urinary Retention After Thoracic Surgery

This study is looking at whether a medication called Tamsulosin (Flomax) can help prevent a common problem called post-operative urinary retention (POUR) after chest surgery. POUR is when you can't urinate after surgery, which can be uncomfortable and lead to needing a catheter. Flomax is approved to help improve urinary flow in men with enlarged prostates. Researchers believe that giving Flomax before and after surgery might reduce POUR. They are testing two different schedules for taking Flomax: either for one week before surgery or for three days before surgery. The study aims to see if men who take Flomax have a lower incidence of POUR. Eligibility criteria

Exclusion

Using Flomax already
Allergy to Flomax or sulfa drugs
Current use of alpha blockers or alpha agonists
Resting systolic blood pressure \<100
Orthostatic hypotension of \>20mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) Systolic and/or 10mm Hg diastolic pressure from sitting to standing (after 2 minutes of standing) as measured at the time of consent
Known diagnosis of congestive heart failure and valvular heart disease
History of prostate surgery (prostatectomy, trans-urethral resection)

    The absence of voiding naturally after undergoing thoracic surgery needing an intervention as a Foley catheter or a catheterization.
