Reading Tutoring for Executive Function in Early Childhood

This study is looking at how reading, math, and thinking skills (executive functions) are connected in young children and how they affect school success. It also explores how children who struggle with reading respond to extra help. The study will provide 20 hours of one-on-one reading tutoring over 6 weeks to some children. Researchers will measure reading skills using the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement, Fourth Edition (WJ-IV) at different times to see if the tutoring helps. You can join if you are a native English-speaking kindergartner between 4 and 9 years old. The study status is currently unclear, meaning it might not be actively recruiting.

Study design
This is an interventional study with 260 kindergartners. Some children will receive 20 hours of 1:1 reading tutoring, while others will not.
What's involved
You would participate in testing at three time points: fall of Kindergarten, spring of Kindergarten, and fall of 1st grade. If selected for the intervention, you would receive 20 hours of 1:1 reading tutoring over 6 weeks, followed by another assessment. Neuroimaging (MRI and fMRI) will also occur at some time points.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Children are followed from the fall of Kindergarten through the spring of 1st grade, with assessments approximately 1 year 3 months after baseline.

  • Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement, Fourth Edition (WJ-IV)Baseline, at study entry (Fall of Kindergarten)

WJ-IV Letter Word Identification, Word Attack, and Passage Comprehension subtests will be administered in order to assess letter and word recognition accuracy, decoding accuracy and reading comprehension. WJ-IV Calculation and Applied Problems will be administered to assess number identification, basic numeracy skills, and math problem solving. To assess whether cognitive and/or neural metrics of executive function and neural metrics of academic achievement predict academic ability at the same time point.

  • Change in Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement, Fourth Edition (WJ-IV)Baseline, at study entry (Fall of Kindergarten); and approximately 1 year after baseline (Fall of 1st Grade)

Change from baseline in reading (as measured by WJ-IV Letter Word Identification, Word Attack, and Passage Comprehension subtests) and math (as measured by WJ-IV Calculation and Applied Problems subtests).

  • Change in Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement, Fourth Edition (WJ-IV)Approximately 1 year after baseline (Fall of 1st Grade); and approximately 1 year 3 months after baseline (Spring of 1st Grade)

Change from pre-intervention testing to post-intervention testing in reading (as measured by WJ-IV Letter Word Identification, Word Attack, and Passage Comprehension subtests) and math (as measured by WJ-IV Calculation and Applied Problems subtests).
