Bed Rest Study for Muscle Atrophy in Older Adults with Diabetes

This study is looking at how pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes affect muscle loss (atrophy) and recovery after a period of bed rest in older adults. You would participate in 10 days of bed rest, followed by 4 weeks of recovery where you can move around. Researchers will measure your leg lean mass and mitochondrial respiration (how your cells make energy) before and after bed rest, and again after the recovery period. The goal is to understand why older adults with diabetes lose muscle faster and how they recover. To join, you must be between 60 and 80 years old, have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, and be taking certain medications like DPP-4 inhibitors, Sulfonylureas, and/or Metformin, with an A1C (a measure of blood sugar) below 8.0.
