Oxytocin for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Patients Using CPAP

This study is looking at whether an intranasal (nose spray) of oxytocin can help people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who use a CPAP machine. Researchers want to see if oxytocin can reduce the amount of pressure your CPAP machine needs to keep your airway open while you sleep. This could potentially lessen the harmful effects of low oxygen. You may be able to join if you are 18 or older, use a CPAP machine for OSA, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding. The main goal is to see how oxytocin changes the pressure needed from your auto-CPAP machine after 5 weeks. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Study design
This is a rigorous randomized, double-blinded, cross-over study involving 40 participants. This means participants will receive both oxytocin and a placebo at different times, and neither you nor the researchers will know which you are receiving.

You would spend three nights in a sleep lab at George Washington University and use either oxytocin or a placebo nasal spray for two weeks each, with a one-week break in between. The study lasts 35 nights.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Men or women 18 years of age or older.

Exclusion

subjects not willing to or otherwise unable to use CPAP for treatment of OSA.
Presence of other sleep disorders
Pregnant or breastfeeding women
Women of child-bearing age (WOCBA) not willing or unable to use an accepted method to avoid pregnancy for the entire duration of the study
Prisoners or subjects who are involuntarily incarcerated
Subjects who are compulsorily detain or treatment of either a psychiatric or physical (i.e. infectious disease) illness
Patients unable to give consent because of a language barrier, or other reason.
