This study is looking at how different types of breathing machine support affect patients who need help breathing. Specifically, it compares two common ways ventilators work: Volume Support Mode Mechanical Ventilation and Assist Control Mode Mechanical Ventilation. The goal is to see if starting with Volume Support Mode, which lets you do more of the breathing yourself, can help you get off the ventilator sooner and prevent weakening of your diaphragm (the main breathing muscle). You might be able to join if you are over 18 and have been on a breathing machine for less than 36 hours. You cannot join if you are pregnant, have had a heart attack, or have certain nerve or muscle conditions. The main way success will be measured is by how many days you can breathe on your own without the ventilator within 28 days.
