Gene Expression Changes in Young and Geriatric Skin

This study is looking at how artificial sunlight (ultraviolet B radiation, or UVB) affects the skin of young adults compared to older adults. Researchers believe that young skin has more of a protein called Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), which might help protect against sun damage. This study will give some participants IGF-1 and others no IGF-1, then expose their skin to UVB. The main goal is to see how genes involved in protecting skin from UVB damage change in both young and older skin after IGF-1 treatment. You could join if you are a male or female with white skin (Fitzpatrick types I and II), aged 21-30 or 65 and older. The study is currently recruiting 24 participants, but its status is unclear.

Inclusion

Male/Female
White skin (Fitzpatrick types I and II)
Age 21-30 or 65 and older
Able to comprehend procedures/risks

Exclusion

Known photosensitivity
Currently on photosensitizing medications
Diabetes Mellitus
History of abnormal scarring
History of skin infections
Known allergy to lidocaine local anesthetic
Pregnancy or nursing
Other serious health issues
