Skeletal Health in Adolescents with Crohn Disease

This observational study is looking at bone health in adolescents (ages 13-20) newly diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) compared to healthy adolescents. Researchers want to understand if CD leads to more fat in bone marrow, which could affect bone strength. They will use special MRI scans (Coronal T1 weighted spin echo images, Spin-lattice relaxation (T1) relaxometry, Magnetic resonance spectroscopy) to look at your bones and take blood samples to check markers related to bone formation and breakdown. The main goal is to see if adolescents with new CD diagnoses have increased bone marrow fat and how that relates to bone mineral density over one year. You can join if you've been diagnosed with Crohn's disease within the last 3 months, or if you are a healthy control, and do not have other conditions or medications that affect bone health.

Study design
This is an observational study comparing 46 adolescents with newly diagnosed Crohn's disease to 46 healthy adolescents.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Crohn's Disease diagnosed within the past 3 months, or a healthy, matched control

Exclusion

Participants with chronic disease known to affect skeletal metabolism
Participants on certain medications within the prior 3 months that are known to affect skeletal metabolism
Participants who are pregnant
Participants who have a history of: claustrophobia, internal body metal that is not compatible with MRI machine, or a known abnormality on or adjacent to the left knee
