Online Motor Control in People With Parkinson's Disease

This study is looking to understand how people with Parkinson's disease control their reaching movements, especially when their environment changes. Researchers will use a motor control assessment, which involves making reaching movements in a virtual reality setting. The study aims to see how accurately and quickly people can adjust their movements. You might be able to join if you are 18-85 years old, can perform reaching movements of about 8 inches, have a good score on a memory test (MMSE score ≥ 26/30), and are able to attend all testing sessions. If you have Parkinson's disease, you also need to be taking dopaminergic/dopamine agonist medication. The study plans to enroll 100 participants, but its current status is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Age 18-85 years
Able to perform reaching movements of \~20 cm (8 inches)
MMSE score ≥ 26/30
Willing and able to attend all testing sessions
Diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease per self report
Currently taking dopaminergic/dopamine agonist medication

Exclusion

Any chronic or recent upper extremity musculoskeletal conditions that affects reaching
Any neurological disorders other than Parkinson's disease (e.g., seizure disorders, closed head injuries with loss of consciousness greater than 15 minutes, CNS neoplasm, history of stroke)
