Hyperpolarized 129Xe MR Imaging for Lung Function

This study is looking at a special type of MRI using hyperpolarized 129Xe gas to better understand lung function. We want to see if this imaging method can help doctors assess lung health in people with conditions like asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension. We are also including healthy volunteers. During the MRI, you would breathe in a small amount of hyperpolarized 129Xe gas. The main goal is to measure something called the RBC/Barrier Ratio on the first day of the study. This study is currently unclear about its recruitment status and plans to enroll about 260 participants.

Inclusion

Subject has no diagnosed pulmonary conditions
Ability to read and understand English or Spanish
Subject has a diagnosis of pulmonary dysfunction made by a physician
No acute worsening of pulmonary function in the past 30 days
Ability to read and understand English or Spanish

Exclusion

MRI is contraindicated based on responses to MRI screening questionnaire
Subject is pregnant or lactating
Subject does not fit into 129Xe vest coil used for MRI
Subject cannot hold his/her breath for 15-16 seconds
Subject deemed unlikely to be able to comply with instructions during imaging
Oxygen saturation \<88% on room air or with supplemental oxygen
Cognitive deficits that preclude ability to provide consent
