Achalasia Study with Atropine Challenge and Biopsy

This study is for people aged 18 and older who have been diagnosed with achalasia or another esophageal motility disorder. It aims to understand achalasia better by looking at how your lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle at the bottom of your esophagus) responds to an Atropine challenge. Researchers will use a special tool called a functional lumen imaging probe (FLIP) to measure muscle contraction and relaxation after you receive intravenous Atropine. They will also collect a small muscle biopsy during a planned surgery (Heller myotomy or per-oral endoscopic myotomy) to examine the collagen content. The goal is to learn more about achalasia so it can be treated earlier. This study plans to enroll 80 participants, but its current status is unclear.
