IMPACT Frailty: Understanding Frailty and Sarcopenia in Critically Ill Patients
This study, called IMPACT Frailty, is looking at frailty (a decline in physical and mental reserves that makes people more vulnerable to stress) and sarcopenia (muscle wasting) in critically ill patients. Researchers want to understand what factors can be changed to help reduce frailty. They will collect 2D ultrasound images of muscles and analyze blood for inflammatory and nutritional biomarkers. Patients or their caregivers will also complete a Frailty Index Questionnaire. The study aims to see how these factors relate to how long patients stay in the ICU and hospital, and where they go after discharge. You might be able to join if you are an adult admitted to the Surgical, Cardiothoracic, or Neuro ICU and expect to stay longer than 24 hours.
- Study design
- This is an observational study involving 250 participants. It is designed to track sarcopenia in critically ill patients.
- What's involved
- You would have 2D ultrasound images taken and blood samples collected for biomarker analysis. You or your surrogate would also complete a Frailty Index Questionnaire.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Patients will be followed from enrollment until hospital discharge, which is approximately 2 weeks to 2 months.
