Cognition and Motor Learning Post-stroke Study

This study is looking at how thinking abilities (cognition) after a stroke affect how people learn to walk better. It's also trying to find brain markers related to this connection. Participants will be 45 to 85 years old, have had a stroke more than 6 months ago affecting one side of their body, and be able to walk independently. You will participate in either "Explicit motor learning" where you get visual feedback on your step lengths while walking on a treadmill, or "Implicit motor learning" where the treadmill moves your legs at different speeds. The main goal is to see how your step length asymmetry changes. The study status is currently unclear, and it plans to enroll 65 people.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Unilateral stroke
Stroke occurred more than 6 months prior
Paresis confined to one side
Independently ambulatory (including the use of assistive devices)
Able to walk for 5 minutes without stopping
Answers no to all general health questions on the PAR-Q+
Willingness to complete study procedures

Exclusion

Brainstem or cerebellar stroke
Aphasia (expressive, receptive, or global)
Any major musculoskeletal or non-stroke neurological condition that interferes with the assessment of sensorimotor or cognitive function
Metal in the head (except in the mouth), implanted cranial or thoracic devices that violate MRI safety regulations
Uncontrolled hypertension (\>160/110mmHg)
Concurrent physical therapy
Claustrophobia
Significant cognitive deficit or dementia (\<20 on MoCA)
Inability to give informed consent
