Neurofeedback for Reading Difficulties After Stroke

This study is testing a new approach called Motor Imagery and Real-Time fMRI Neurofeedback to help people who have trouble reading after a stroke. This method uses a special type of brain scan (fMRI) to show you your brain activity in real-time while you imagine moving your right hand. The goal is to help your brain shift activity back to the left side, which is important for language. You might also be in a group that uses Motor Imagery and Sham fMRI Neurofeedback, which is a comparison group. This study is for people aged 18-80 who have had a stroke affecting the left side of their brain within the last 10 weeks and have reading difficulties, or healthy volunteers. Researchers will measure how accurately you read aloud and changes in your brain activity to see if the treatment is successful. The study is planning to enroll 28 participants, but its current status is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

First-ever left-hemisphere stroke \< 3 months prior to study recruitment or healthy volunteer
Age: 18 - 80 years old
Fluent and literate in English prior to stroke
Reading deficits, defined as \>3 errors on the Paragraphs test (subtests VIII, IX) of the Reading Comprehension Battery for Aphasia-2nd ed. (RCBA-2) in keeping with the healthy control accuracy criterion of 86-100% correct.

Exclusion

Inability to consent or complete study tasks
Inability to undergo MRI (e.g., pregnancy, non-MRI compatible implants, claustrophobia)
A history of prior neurological disease (e.g., brain tumor, Alzheimer's disease)
