Autologous Blood Patch for Prolonged Air Leak After Lung Cancer Surgery

This study is testing if an Autologous Blood Patch (ABP) can help prevent prolonged air leaks (PAL) after lung cancer surgery. An ABP involves taking a small amount of your own blood and putting it into your chest tube. You might be eligible if you've had surgery for non-small cell lung cancer and still have an air leak on the third day after your operation. The study wants to see if ABP reduces the time you stay in the hospital and if you need to be readmitted within 30 days. This study is currently enrolling patients in the United States and Canada.

Study design
This is a multi-institutional randomized, controlled trial with 60 participants per group. You would either receive the Autologous Blood Patch or standard care, as decided by your surgeon.
What's involved
If you have an air leak on the third day after surgery, you would be asked to participate. If randomized to the ABP group, 60-100 ml of your blood would be drawn and put into your chest tube on day 3 and possibly day 4. You will also complete a questionnaire in person or over the phone.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Patients who underwent elective wedge resection, segmentectomy, lobectomy, or bilobectomy for suspected non-small cell lung cancer
Patients that have reviewed and signed the Informed Consent Form, had an opportunity to ask questions, and consent to have their de-identified data included in the study
Patients who have an air leak on the morning of postoperative Day 3
Age ≥18 years old

Exclusion

Patients who undergo pneumonectomy, sleeve lobectomy, chest wall or diaphragm resection, or bilateral procedures.
