Trauma Center-Based Intervention for Adolescent Traumatic Injury Survivors

This study is evaluating two approaches for helping adolescents (ages 12-17) who have experienced a traumatic injury. One group will receive services from the Trauma Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP). The other group will receive "Enhanced Usual Care," which involves an educational flyer with referrals to services. Researchers want to see if TRRP helps reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression at 3 months after the injury, compared to the usual care. You might be able to join if you are an adolescent between 12 and 17 years old, have had a traumatic injury, and scored significantly on a distress scale. You cannot join if your injury was self-inflicted or so severe it prevents communication. The study aims to enroll 300 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

adolescent ages 12-17 admitted following traumatic injury
scored significantly on the peritraumatic distress scale (PDI / ITSS)

Exclusion

if the injury was self-inflicted
injuries are so severe, they prevent participation (e.g., head or spinal cord injuries that prevent verbal communication)

    The CPSS is a 26-item measure to assess PTSD diagnostic criteria and severity in youth. Responses are assessed using a 4-point Likert scale and a cutoff score of 31 can be used for identifying a probable PTSD diagnosis in children.

    This is a 20-item measure of depression with strong psychometric properties. Responses are assessed using a 4-point Likert scale and a cutoff score of 15 is suggestive of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents.
