TDCS for Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment

This study is looking at whether a treatment called anodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (A-tDCS) can help improve thinking and memory problems after a stroke. A-tDCS uses a device to deliver a mild electrical current to the brain. Participants will also receive computerized cognitive treatment (CCT). We are looking for about 60 adults, aged 18 to 100, who have recently had a minor stroke and are experiencing mild cognitive impairment. The study will measure changes in your thinking abilities and brain activity over 6 months to see if the treatment is successful. The current status of this study is unclear.

Study design
This is a randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled study with about 60 participants. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either A-tDCS or a sham (inactive) treatment, both combined with CCT.

Participants will undergo 5 weeks of either A-tDCS + CCT or sham + CCT. Clinical evaluations and cognitive assessments will be performed at 1, 3, and 6 months after your stroke.

    Our cognitive battery was designed to efficiently evaluate for psMCI. It combines the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Grooved Pegboard, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, Brief Visuospatial Memory Test, Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System, and Symbol Digit Modalities Test. T scores are averaged across tasks and calculated for the following cognitive domains: verbal memory, spatial memory, processing speed, motor speed, executive function, and global cognition.

    Participants will undergo an MEG evaluating global functional connectivity: 1) during resting state, and 2) during completion of a visual task. Connectivity will also be evaluated within the following specific cognitive networks: frontoparietal (executive) and limbic (memory)
