Understanding Mood, Eating, and Exercise for Gut Health

This study is looking at how different moods and feelings might affect your stomach and digestion when you eat before exercising. Many athletes wonder if their emotions impact gut problems during competition, and this study aims to find out. You would watch short video clips that are funny, scary, or thrilling to create different moods. After watching, you'll eat some food and then run on a treadmill. Researchers will then measure any stomach or digestion problems you experience during exercise. They will also look at how your body responds physically and metabolically (how your body uses energy) to these different moods. The study is open to healthy adults aged 18 to 55 who are physically active and can run for 30 minutes.

Study design
This study is an interventional study planning to enroll 90 participants. It will involve participants watching different types of video clips.
What's involved
You would watch 5-7 minutes of video clips, eat food, and then participate in a 30-minute jogging/running protocol.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
The primary endpoints are measured during and immediately after the exercise protocol, and immediately after video watching.

  • Total exercise gastrointestinal symptom burdenTotal GI symptom burden over a 30-minute jogging/running protocol.

The severity of several gastrointestinal symptoms will be assessed on a validated 0-10 scale. Ratings will be collected every 5 minutes during a 30-minute treadmill jogging/running test. Scores from every 5-minute collection will be summed to calculate total GI symptom scores.

  • Change in emotion ratingsChange in emotion ratings between immediately pre-video and immediately post-video.

Anxiety, fear, happiness, amusement, disgust, sadness, and anger on a 0-9 Likert scale. Emotions will be assessed before watching video clips and immediately after watching video clips.
