Trigeminal Neuralgia Electrophysiology Study

This study is looking at a new way to improve personalized mapping during percutaneous rhizotomy, a procedure for trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain). Researchers will test the feasibility of adding trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEPs) to the standard rhizotomy procedure. This involves recording electrical signals from your brain (EEG) and from the trigeminal ganglion (a nerve cluster in your head) before and after the procedure. The goal is to see if these measurements can help doctors better target the treatment. You may be able to join if you are an adult (18 or older) scheduled to have a percutaneous rhizotomy for facial pain. The study aims to determine if this new measurement technique is possible over a three-year period. The current recruitment status is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Adults of 18 years or older
Scheduled to undergo percutaneous rhizotomy for facial pain
Adults of 18 years or older

Exclusion

Facial pain of unclear origin (i.e. not clearly TGN pain)
Rhizotomy procedure canceled
Diagnosis or history of facial pain such as TMD or TGN
History of migraine
History of any functional pain disorder: fibromyalgia, IBS, CRPS
Recent chronic pain (within last month)
Unwilling to participate for two hours in lab
Current acute pain
