Oxygen Supplementation and Breathing Recovery After Surgery

This study is looking at how different levels of oxygen given after surgery affect your breathing recovery. Researchers will compare giving more oxygen (Oxyhemoglobin saturation (SpO2) higher than 96%) versus a standard amount (SpO2 between 90% and 94%) for 90 minutes right after anesthesia. The main goal is to see how long your carbon dioxide levels (TcPCO2) stay above a certain point. You may be able to join if you are between 18 and 70 years old, have a BMI under 40, and are having robotic-assisted radical laparoscopic nephrectomy or prostatectomy surgery. People with certain lung, heart, or neurological conditions cannot join. This study plans to enroll 60 participants, but its current status is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I-III
Body mass index (BMI) less than 40 kg/m2
Scheduled to undergo robotic-assisted radical laparoscopic nephrectomy or prostatectomy.

Exclusion

Patients with a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), severe neurological, cardiopulmonary, psychiatric, or untreated thyroid disorder
Chronic pain condition that is being treated with opioids
Patients with a hematocrit lower than 30% at the end of surgery, or those with an excessive blood loss, requiring transfusion of blood products during surgery.
