Understanding Psychosis in Youth: A Study at Rady Children's

This study at Rady Children's Institute for Genomic Medicine is looking for 15 children and adolescents, aged 7 to 17, who are admitted to the hospital with new symptoms of psychosis (changes in how one perceives and interacts with the world) or schizophrenia. The goal is to better understand the causes of psychosis by studying participants' genes and immune systems. Researchers will use advanced genetic sequencing (Genomic sequencing) and a test called Phage display ImmunoPrecipiation Sequencing (PhIP-Seq) to look for genetic changes and specific autoantibodies (antibodies that mistakenly attack the body's own tissues, in this case, the brain). The study hopes to find new genetic or autoimmune causes of psychosis that could lead to better diagnosis and treatment in the future. The main goal is to see how often brain-reactive autoantibodies are found, measured over two years.
