Digital Therapeutics for Child Behavior Problems

This study is testing two different digital tools, the UseIt! app and a coach-assisted UseIt! app, to see how well they help parents manage disruptive behaviors in children aged 5 to 8 years old. The UseIt! app offers parenting skills, a trouble-shooting guide, and a behavior diary. Some parents will also receive support from a coach. A third group will use the SmilingMind app, which is a mindfulness app. To join, your child must be between 5 and 8 years old and show signs of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or conduct disorders. You also need a smartphone with daily internet access. Researchers will measure success by how much parents learn about effective parenting skills after 4 months and again after 10 months. Study design
This study plans to enroll 324 families. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: using the UseIt! app alone, using the UseIt! app with a coach, or using the SmilingMind app.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Males or females between the ages of 5-8 years
Above the 90th percentile for Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and/or conduct disorders (CD) on the Vanderbilt Assessment Scale
Residence with at least one parent/guardian at least 80% of the time
Parent/legal guardian consent for participation
Parent/guardian must have a smartphone device with daily internet access

Exclusion

A known preexisting behavioral or mental health diagnosis requiring alternative treatment (bipolar disorder, major depression, pervasive developmental disorder)
Currently in treatment for childhood disruptive behavior
