This study is looking for people with aphasia (a language disorder often caused by stroke) to test new ways to improve word-finding difficulties. You would participate in a naming treatment that uses different approaches: one where you repeat words immediately (Accuracy-maximized condition), one where you have time to try and say the word yourself (Effort-maximized condition), and one that balances these two (Effort-accuracy balanced condition). Researchers want to see if these treatments help you remember words better long-term and use them more easily in daily life. To join, you must be at least 18 years old, have chronic aphasia (more than 6 months after a stroke in the left side of your brain), and have difficulty with at least two sections of a specific language test. Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Existing diagnosis of chronic (\>6 months) aphasia subsequent to left hemisphere ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
Impaired performance on 2/8 sections of the Comprehensive Aphasia Test.

Exclusion

History of other acquired or progressive neurological disease.
Significant language comprehension impairments
Unmanaged drug / alcohol dependence.
Severe diagnosed mood or behavioral disorders that require specialize mental health interventions.
  • Change in correct responses in Confrontation Naming of Treated Pictured ObjectsInitial assessment (pre-treatment), 3 months post-treatment

    Confrontation naming accuracy of pictures targeted in each training condition will serve as a primary outcome. Individualized lists for each participant will be selected from a corpus of pictured objects. Performance will be evaluated twice at each timepoint. Change in performance from initial assessment to the 3-month follow-up timepoint on the treated items will serve as the primary outcome measure.
