Tissue Destruction and Healing in Celiac Disease Study

This study aims to understand how celiac disease affects your body, specifically how gluten interacts with your gut, immune system, and genetics. Researchers want to learn why some people with celiac disease have different symptoms and how well their gut tissue can heal. You might be eligible if you are 18-75 years old and have been diagnosed with celiac disease for at least 12 months and follow a strict gluten-free diet, or if you have celiac disease symptoms and are not on a gluten-free diet. Participants in one group will eat snack bars containing 3 grams of gluten daily for 6 weeks. The study will measure changes in your intestinal villus to crypt ratios (a measure of gut health) at the beginning and after 6 weeks or 12 months, depending on your group. The study status is currently unclear, and it plans to enroll 220 people.

Study design
This is an interventional study, meaning participants will receive a specific intervention. It plans to enroll 220 participants.
What's involved
If you are in the gluten challenge group, you would ingest snack bars containing 3 grams of gluten every day for 6 weeks. Intestinal villus to crypt ratios will be measured at baseline and after 6 weeks or 12 months.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Participants in the gluten challenge group will have their gut health measured after 6 weeks. Participants in the gluten de-challenge group will have their gut health measured after 12 months.
