Clinical Decision Support System for Ventilator Weaning in Children After Cardiac Surgery

This study is looking at how a special computer program, called a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), can help children with congenital heart disease (a heart problem present at birth) who need a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation) after surgery. The CDSS is built into a software platform (T3) that gathers information from your child's monitors and lab results. Doctors and nurses will use the CDSS to help decide when to take your child off the breathing machine. Researchers want to see if using this system can help children come off the breathing machine sooner. This study is for children under 12 years old who have had heart surgery and have been on a breathing machine for at least 48 hours at Boston Children's Hospital. The goal is to reduce the time children spend on mechanical ventilation, which will be measured up to 28 days after surgery. The current status of this study is unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Children \< 12 years old
Post-cardiac surgery
Receiving mechanical ventilation for ≥ 48 hours in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children's Hospital following surgery

Exclusion

Premature infants (\<37 weeks' gestation)
Weight \< 2kg
Baseline ventilator (via tracheostomy) or noninvasive positive pressure dependence
