Pulse Oximetry Accuracy by Skin Color in Children Undergoing Surgery

This study is looking at how accurate pulse oximeters (devices that measure oxygen in your blood through your skin) are for children with different skin colors during surgery. Specifically, it compares the accuracy in Black children versus White children. Researchers will take a small blood sample (called an arterial blood gas with co-oximetry) from children aged 2 to 9 years old who are having surgery under general anesthesia. This blood sample will be compared to the pulse oximeter reading to see how well the pulse oximeter works. The study aims to see if pulse oximeters work differently depending on skin color. The study plans to enroll 540 children.

Inclusion

Children aged 2-9 years undergoing general anesthesia with or without arterial line placement.

Exclusion

Patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease.
Patients with bleeding disorders.
Patients taking blood thinners.
