Functional Electrical Stimulation for Cough in Acute Spinal Cord Injury
This study is looking at ways to improve coughing ability in people with acute spinal cord injury (SCI). It tests using a device called the Xcite Clinical Station, which provides abdominal functional electrical stimulation (AFES), along with respiratory muscle training. This treatment aims to help you cough better on your own. You might be able to join if you are 18 or older, have a C2-T12 spinal cord injury that happened within the last 12 months, are currently in inpatient rehabilitation, and can speak and write in English. The researchers will measure how much your peak cough flow and peak expiratory flow (how fast you can breathe out) change over time to see if the treatment is successful.
