PET/CT Imaging for Heart Radiation Damage in Lung or Esophageal Cancer

This study, called EUCLID, is looking at how radiation therapy for lung or esophageal cancer might affect your heart. Sometimes, radiation can reach the heart, potentially changing how it works. Doctors don't fully understand these changes or how to best detect them. This study uses a special type of scan called a sarcoidosis fludeoxyglucose F-18 (FDG) PET-CT (positron emission tomography-computed tomography) to look for these changes in the heart. Researchers want to see if these imaging changes can help predict overall survival, heart-related problems, or even death. You might be able to join if you are at least 18 years old, have lung or esophageal cancer, and are expected to live at least 3 months. The study aims to enroll 20 participants.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Provide signed and dated informed consent form
Willing to comply with all study procedures and be available for the duration of the study
Male or female, aged \>= 18
Life expectancy \>= 3 months as assessed by Radiation Oncologist
Mean heart dose estimated by Radiation Oncologist to be \>= 5 Gy (physics dose or biologically equivalent dose)
Pathologically proven (either histologic or cytologic) proven lung cancer or esophageal cancer
Planned radiation treatment course for management of lung or esophageal cancer \* Both standard and hypofractionation schedules are permitted

Exclusion

Contraindication for FDG PET-CT scans as assessed by the radiation oncologist or nuclear medicine radiologist
Palliative radiation doses defined as 20 Gy in 5 fractions
