Strong Teens for Healthy Schools Change Club for Cardiovascular Health

This study, called Strong Teens for Healthy Schools (STHS), is looking at how a school-based program can help middle school students improve their physical activity and healthy eating habits. The program aims to empower students to make positive changes in their school environment that can lead to better heart health. Students in certain 6th and 7th grades who attend specific Title 1 middle schools in Texas may be able to join. The study will compare students who participate in the STHS program with those who receive usual school activities. Researchers will measure changes in risk factors for metabolic syndrome (a group of conditions that increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes) and overall positive youth development to see if the program is successful. Study design
This is an interventional study involving 500 participants. Schools will be randomly assigned to either participate in the STHS program or continue with their usual activities.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

\> 50 6th and 7th grade students
\> 40% economically disadvantaged students
\> 40% Black and Hispanic students
6th or 7th grade student
Attend a Title 1 middle school that is participating in the STHS intervention
Read and understand English

Exclusion

Participation in a weight loss program in the past 3 months
Presence of a condition that prevents participation in physical activity

    Positive youth development will be measured using a 5 C's Model of Positive Youth Development Scale-Short Form (PYD-SF): A 34-item scale that assesses the strength of psychological, behavioral, and social development in youth. Connection (bonds with people and institutions) 5. Caring (sympathy and empathy towards others)
