Social Support for Veteran Smoking Cessation
This study is looking for Veterans who smoke and a family member or friend (support person) to help them quit. The goal is to see if having a support person, who receives a coaching call and written materials on how to help, can encourage Veterans to use existing smoking cessation treatments. Veterans will also receive written materials about resources for quitting. Researchers want to understand how social support impacts a Veteran's journey to quit smoking and if it helps them use treatments like quitlines or counseling. This information will help create better ways to support Veterans in quitting smoking. The study plans to enroll 2376 participants and will measure how many Veterans use cessation treatments at 6 months.

What this trial measures
- Use of Any Evidence-Based Cessation Treatments (EBCTs)6 months
The primary outcome will be use of any EBCT assessed at the 6 month follow-up: medication, behavioral intervention, or combination using both self-report and VHA administrative data. Data will be extracted from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) to assess VA treatment use. VA outpatient prescription records will be used to assess receipt and amount of pharmacotherapy (bupropion, varenicline, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)) and VA outpatient encounters associated with smoking cessation will be assed using stop codes (i.e., 707 and 708) and/or diagnoses treated for nicotine dependence (i.e., ICD10-F17.XX) to assess behavioral interventions. Use of QuitVET, SmokefreeVET, Department of Defense (DoD) and non-VHA treatment use will be assessed using self-report.
