The HOME Study: Telehealth Nutrition for Brain Injury

This study, called The HOME Study, is looking at whether nutrition counseling can improve the diets of people who have had a brain injury and are living at home. Many people with brain injuries face ongoing health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure, and often don't receive nutrition support. This trial will compare changes in diet quality between two groups: one receiving three one-on-one nutrition sessions with a Registered Dietitian (Medical Nutrition Therapy) and another receiving only nutrition handouts. The goal is to see if counseling leads to better eating habits. You may be able to join if you are at least 18, have a brain injury, live in Alabama at home, and have internet access.

Study design
This study will recruit 134 participants with brain injury and randomly assign them to either receive nutrition counseling or just educational materials. It is designed as a pre/post study to compare diet quality changes.
What's involved
You would complete nutrition-related questionnaires and dietary recalls at the start and again approximately 6 weeks later. If in the intervention group, you would also participate in three one-on-one nutrition counseling sessions via Zoom.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Your diet quality will be measured at the start of the study and again approximately 6 weeks later.

  • Change in Diet QualityBaseline and approximately 6 weeks later

Diet quality is measured using the Healthy Eating Index Score, which ranges from 0-100. Higher scores indicate better diet quality. The score will be calculated at baseline and approximately 6 weeks later, and these timepoints will be used to calculate the change in diet quality over the study duration.
