Contextual Word Learning in Children With Developmental Language Disorder

This study is looking at how children learn new words from context, especially those with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), which makes learning language difficult. We're testing a "Contextual Word Learning Intervention" that combines two strategies: teaching children how to figure out word meanings from clues (metalinguistic training) and using different texts with varied meanings (high semantic diversity). The goal is to see if this intervention helps children with DLD learn new words more effectively. We will measure how much children know about new words using the Measure of Semantic Knowledge (MSK). Children aged 7 to 11 years can join. For children with typical development, you would have scored above 90 on a language test in 2nd grade. For children with DLD, you would have scored 85 or below on that same test. We are currently enrolling 100 participants.

Study design
This is an interventional study involving 100 participants, divided into two groups: children with typical development and children with developmental language disorder. It is not specified if it is randomized or blinded.
What's involved
You would be exposed to novel words and have your semantic knowledge measured one week after exposure. For some, this measurement will also happen before and one week after the intervention.
Compensation
Not stated in the trial record.
Follow-up
Your semantic knowledge will be measured one week after exposure to novel words, and for some, one week post-intervention.
