The Synchrony Study: Music Training for Children With FASD

This study, called The Synchrony Study, is looking at whether music training can help children aged 8 to 16 who have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD is a range of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. We want to see if daily music listening or daily piano practice improves how children control their behavior, pay attention, and remember things. Participants will either listen to music or practice piano for 12 weeks. We are looking for 32 children who have a research diagnosis of FASD and confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure. Children with other developmental disorders not linked to FASD, like Down Syndrome, cannot join, but those with attention deficits like ADHD can. The study aims to understand if music training can improve behavioral regulation and cognitive performance (attention and working memory) in children with FASD.

Study design

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Children must receive a research designation of FASD
Children must have confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure

Exclusion

Children with other confirmed developmental disorders that are not deemed associated with FASD (e.g. autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome). Children with attention deficits (e.g. ADHD) are not excluded.
Children with neurological disorders (epilepsy, cerebral palsy, etc.)
Children who have experienced a traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness \>10 minutes
Children with intelligence quotient scores \<70
Children who are, or become, a ward of the state; however children with a legal representative who can consent on their behalf will not be excluded
Children with ongoing music training outside of school or \>1 year of prior private music lessons.
