Understanding Long-Term Lung Problems After COVID-19
This study aims to understand why some people have lasting lung problems like shortness of breath and tiredness after a severe COVID-19 infection. Researchers will use various tests including Bronchoscopies and Bronchoalveolar Lavages (BALs) (a procedure using a thin tube to look at your lungs and collect samples), Chest Tomography (CT) scans (X-rays for internal organs), Electrocardiograms (ECG) (measures heart activity), Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) (measures lung function), and a 6-minute walk test. You may be able to join if you are 18 or older, had COVID-19 confirmed by a PCR test, were hospitalized for COVID-19, and do not have pre-existing lung disease. The study will look for clinical, imaging, immune, molecular, and/or viral traits that explain these long-term lung issues, with results expected after 4 years. This study will expand on prior observations from a previous study and discover potential drivers and targets for therapy of post-acute COVID-19 lung disease by recruiting a larger group of COVID-19 convalescents, following up longitudinally up to 12 months after acute infection.
