Blood Flow Regulation and Muscle Fatigue After Stroke Study

This study is looking into why muscles in people who have had a stroke might get tired faster. Researchers want to understand how blood flows to leg muscles during exercise after a stroke. They will use a safe and simple method called ischemic conditioning, where a cuff is inflated on the leg, to see if it can improve blood flow and reduce muscle fatigue. The main goal is to measure how blood flow changes and how that affects muscle fatigue over 3 to 5 years. You might be able to join if you are 18-85 years old, had a stroke at least 6 months ago, and speak English. The study is currently recruiting participants.

Study design
This is an interventional study planning to enroll 40 participants. It includes a randomized, controlled, double-blinded part to test ischemic conditioning.

If you are a stroke survivor, you would make six visits to laboratories at Marquette University and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Control participants would make three visits.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Be between 18-85 years of age
Able to give informed consent
≥6 months post diagnosis of unilateral cortical or sub-cortical stroke
English speaking

Exclusion

History of blood clots in the extremities or any condition in which compression of the thigh or transient ischemia is contraindicated (e.g. wounds in the leg)
Chronic pain syndrome
Low back or hip pain that interferes with lower extremity motor testing
History of head trauma
Comorbid neurological disorder
Peripheral vascular disease
Myocardial infarction in the previous year
Inability to follow 2 step commands
Condition where fatiguing contractions or resisted leg contractions are contraindicated
Resting SBP ≥160 mmHg or DBP ≥ 110 mmHg
Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
