Comparing Four Ureteral Stents for Urinary Stone Symptoms

This study is looking at how different ureteral stents affect symptoms after surgery for kidney or ureteral (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) stones. Researchers want to see if the 6Fr Percuflex, 6Fr Tria, 4.8Fr Percuflex, or 4.8Fr Tria stents lead to fewer urinary symptoms, less pain, and better general health. The Tria stents are designed to soften at body temperature and prevent mineral buildup, which might make them more comfortable. You could be eligible if you are between 18 and 89 years old, need surgery for urinary stones, and will have a stent placed. The study aims to enroll 272 participants to understand which stent is best for reducing discomfort.

Study design
This is a prospective randomized controlled trial comparing four different ureteral stents in 272 participants. Participants will be assigned by chance to receive one of the four stents.
What's involved
You would have three clinic visits in addition to the surgery: a pre-operative visit, a stent removal visit 1-2 weeks after surgery, and a post-operative visit 3-6 weeks after surgery. You will complete a questionnaire about your symptoms twice.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Patients with renal or ureteral urinary stones who require endoscopic treatment and stent placement in the outpatient operating room.

Exclusion

Pregnant patients
Patients with transplant kidneys
Patients with irreversible coagulopathy
Patients with known ureteral stricture disease
Non-English speaking, vulnerable patients such as lacking of decision-making capability, prisoner, adult unable to consent, will not be enrolled.
Patients with planned staged procedures.
Patients who have stent placed before surgery.
