Hyperpolarized 13C-pyruvate Metabolic MRI for Traumatic Brain Injury

This study is looking at a new way to use MRI scans to understand early brain changes after a head injury. It uses a special injection called Hyperpolarized 13C-Pyruvate (13C) along with an MRI to see how your brain uses energy. The goal is to see if this method can help doctors better diagnose traumatic brain injury (TBI) by comparing results from people with TBI, people with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH - bleeding around the brain), and healthy volunteers. The study is open to adults aged 18 to 80 who have had a recent head injury and are able to have an MRI. Success will be measured by how well the MRI can show the conversion of pyruvate to other substances in the brain. The study plans to enroll up to 15 participants and is currently unclear on its recruitment status.

Inclusion

History of acute head injury with or suspected non-penetrating acute TBI
Suitable to undergo contrast-enhanced MRI
Negative serum pregnancy test

Exclusion

Inability to undergo MRI scan
Inability to receive IV MRI contrast agents secondary to severe reaction or renal insufficiency
Positive pregnancy test
