Observational Study of Oral Microbes in Dental Implant Patients
This study is looking at how the types of bacteria in your mouth (oral microbiome) change when you go from having some teeth to no teeth, and then after you receive dental implants. Researchers will collect samples of these bacteria to see how they change over time. They also want to see if different types of dental implants affect these changes. The goal is to understand these changes better to help plan future studies. You might be able to join if you are at least 21 years old, have severe gum disease (Stage III or IV periodontitis), and are planning to have all your teeth removed and replaced with dental implants. The study is currently enrolling 12 participants.
- Study design
- This is an observational study involving 12 participants. It is not a treatment study, but rather aims to understand changes in the oral microbiome.
- What's involved
- You would have microbial samples taken at different stages: when you have some teeth, after all teeth are removed, and after dental implants are placed. This will occur over an average of 24 months.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Participants will be followed through study completion, which is an average of 24 months.

What this trial measures
- Oral microbiome composition changes in patients who are dentate, edentulous, and have dental implantsThrough study completion, an average of 24 months
To analyze the oral microbiome modulations through DNA analysis of microbial samples occurring during the transition from partial (with some residual teeth) to full edentulous (without remaining teeth) status and implant placement in subjects affected by severe periodontitis
- Oral microbiome changes in two different implant platform typesThrough study completion, an average of 24 months
To evaluate if microbiome changes through DNA analysis of microbial samples in relation to the use of different implant material/surface
