Communication Skills Training for Transplant Providers

This study aims to improve communication between transplant providers and patients, especially Black patients, about living donor kidney transplants (LDKT). Researchers will develop and test a training program called "EPPComm Provider Training" for transplant providers. This training will help providers educate patients about LDKT and encourage them to find potential living donors, while respecting their values and cultural preferences. The study will look at how this training affects the number of living donor inquiries, evaluations, and actual living donor kidney transplants over four years. You might be able to join if you are 18 to 80 years old, speak English, and are Black or Caucasian, and are having a kidney transplant evaluation at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center or Temple University Hospital. The study status is currently unclear.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

(1) appear for a kidney transplant evaluation at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) or Temple University Hospital (TUH)
(2) speak English
(3) be of self-reported Black or Caucasian ethnicity
(4) be ≥18 years of age.

Exclusion

(1) are non-verbal or otherwise unable to converse with providers
(2) are already listed for kidney transplant at CBMC or TUHS or at another transplant center
(3) have limited English proficiency and speak directly with the physician in a language other than English.
