Comparing Methods for Recording Post-Operative Pain

This study is looking for the best way to collect information about pain after surgery. It compares three methods: a novel electronic pain recording device, a hand-written pain journal, and a smartphone app. You would be randomly assigned to use one of these methods to record your pain levels. The study aims to see which method helps collect the most pain information. To join, you need to be over 18 years old and able to use a smartphone or write. You cannot participate if you have altered mental status, nerve damage causing loss of pain sensation, or a nerve catheter (which means you wouldn't have pain). The study will compare how many pain recordings are collected by each method up to two weeks after you leave the hospital.

Study design
This is an interventional study that plans to enroll 147 participants. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups.

Patient cannot use his hands to write or press a button
Patient has a nerve catheter (has no pain)
Altered mental status
Neuropathy causing loss of pain sensation

    Pain Scores will be measured on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) via 3 different methods to determine the best way to collect pain intensity data. The Visual Analog Scale goes from 0-10 where 0 means no pain and 10 means maximum pain.
