Financial Incentives for Dual Smoker Couples
This study is testing if financial incentives can help couples where both partners smoke (dual-smoker couples) quit smoking. You might be able to join if you are 18 or older, smoke 5 or more cigarettes daily, and live with or are married to another daily smoker who also smokes 5+ cigarettes and is over 18. Your relationship should have lasted at least six months. The study will measure success by looking at how many people have stopped smoking after 6 months. The current status of this study is unclear.
- Study design
- This study is an interventional trial with 900 planned participants. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group with no financial incentives, a group where one partner receives incentives, or a group where both partners receive incentives.
- What's involved
- Participants will complete a baseline session and four follow-up sessions at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. You will also be offered quitting resources and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
- Compensation
- Participants in the financial incentive groups will receive $200 for verified abstinence at 1, 3, and 6 months, plus a $200 bonus for demonstrating additional criteria.
- Follow-up
- Participants will be followed for 12 months after the baseline session, with the primary success measurement at 6 months.
