Preventing Type 2 Diabetes After Gestational Diabetes with Immediate Postpartum Screening
This study is looking at a new way to screen for Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) in women who had gestational diabetes (GDM) during pregnancy. Currently, many women don't attend their recommended postpartum diabetes screening. This study will test if doing a 2-hour glucose tolerance test (a diagnostic test for diabetes) right after delivery, while you are still in the hospital, can help more women get screened. Some participants will receive this early testing, while others will receive standard care, which includes educational materials about healthy living and diabetes risks. The main goals are to see if early screening helps detect T2DM and to check blood sugar levels (Hemoglobin A1c). You might be able to join if you had GDM, are delivering at UMASS Memorial, and can have the in-hospital glucose testing.
- Study design
- This is an interventional study with a planned enrollment of 116 women. Participants will be randomized to either receive early glucose tolerance testing or standard care.
- What's involved
- Participants will either have a 2-hour glucose tolerance test during their postpartum hospitalization or receive educational materials. Blood sugar levels will be measured at the time of postpartum screening.
- Compensation
- Not stated in the trial record.
- Follow-up
- Detection of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Glycemic Outcomes will be measured at the time of postpartum screening (postpartum day 1 or 6-week postpartum visit depending on the group you are in).
