Comparing Blood Pressure Cuffs in Pregnant Patients

This study is comparing two different types of blood pressure cuffs: a conical cuff for the forearm and a cylindrical cuff for the upper arm. The goal is to see how well these two cuffs agree on blood pressure readings in pregnant women. This is important because accurate blood pressure measurements are key for diagnosing conditions like gestational hypertension (high blood pressure during pregnancy) and preeclampsia (a serious pregnancy complication). You may be eligible if you are a woman aged 18 or older with a BMI of 20 or greater, and are coming to Labor and Delivery. The study will look for agreement between the cuffs' systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure readings.

Study design
This interventional study plans to enroll 110 participants. Participants will be divided into groups based on whether they have normal blood pressure or high blood pressure, and whether they are obese or not.

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion

Women who are 18 years of age or older with a
Body mass index (BMI) of 20 kg/m2 or greater
Present to Labor and Delivery with or without a diagnosis of gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, or chronic hypertension with super-imposed preeclampsia, in spontaneous labor or for induction of labor

Exclusion

Significant peripheral arterial disease resulting in at least a 10 mm Hg blood pressure difference between both arms
History of repaired or unrepaired congenital heart disease
History of significant arrythmia
History of pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator placement
History of sickle cell disease
History of Raynaud's phenomenon on any extremity
History of lymph node dissection of either upper extremity
Patients who are less than 18 years of age
