Exercise and Beetroot Juice for Post-Menopausal Women
This study is looking at how different exercise intensities and a drink called Nitrate-Rich Beetroot Juice affect heart health and fitness in women after menopause. Menopause can increase the risk of heart disease, and researchers want to see if combining specific exercise with this juice can help. You might receive Nitrate-Rich Beetroot Juice or a placebo (Nitrate-Depleted Placebo Beetroot Juice), along with either High Intensity Exercise or Moderate Intensity Exercise. The main goals are to measure your blood vessel health (Vascular Endothelial Function) and how fit your heart and lungs are (Cardiorespiratory Fitness) at the beginning and after one month of exercise training. We are looking for women aged 45 to 75 who are post-menopausal and don't exercise regularly.

What this trial measures
- Vascular Endothelial Function (Flow-Mediated Dilation [FMD])Baseline and after 1-month of exercise training
Participants will be placed in a supine position with their left forearm slightly extended and supinated with legs straight. The arteries will be imaged using a high-resolution 7.5MHz linear array transducer at rest, during 5 minutes of forearm occlusion via cuff inflation, and continuously for 3 minutes post-occlusion; an EKG trigger will be used to capture images during end-diastole of the cardiac cycle.
- Cardiorespiratory FitnessBaseline and after 1-month of exercise training
Peak aerobic capacity (VO2peak) will be assessed using a symptom-limited graded exercise test on a treadmill. An IV will be placed and lactate measured during rest and after the completion of every 3-minute stage to determine lactate threshold at VO2peak.
